NPHD College Program Initiatives

To bring its educational programs to the broadest possible audience, the NonProfit HelpDesk develops programs in collaboration with the colleges of CUNY, the City University of New York.

Medgar Evers College
NPHD is offering full-day classes/workshops in the Business Institute of the Adult and Continuing Education program of Medgar Evers College. This year's programs include a class in Presentation Skills, as well as a workshop on Coaching Essentials. Both are highly interactive and offer practical, hands-on experience.

Presentation Skills will be offered on November 27th from 9:30 A.M. to 4:30 PM. Coaching Essentials will be offered on November 6th from 9:30 A.M. to 5:30 PM.

Those who are interested in registering for these courses can do so by calling Jen Robinson at NPHD (718-449-5000 x2222).

College Credit-Bearing Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management

The NonProfit HelpDesk has designed and championed a new college credit-bearing certificate program in nonprofit financial management, now being offered at Brooklyn College of CUNY. The program, the first of its kind in New York City, was developed with grant support from the Brooklyn Community Foundation.

In working with nonprofits for over a decade the NPHD has found that organizations that have staff with college-level education in fiscal and operational management are more effective, efficient and accountable. We developed this Certificate Program so that more organizations can have staff with this kind of education. When staff members at nonprofit organizations enroll in this program, they will be able to implement what they learn immediately on the job.

The program combines accounting and related courses taught under the aegis of the Brooklyn College Department of Economics with new courses designed by the NonProfit HelpDesk, for a total of 24 credits.

This certificate program has been approved by the New York State Board of Regents. Courses are open to both those matriculating (enrolled as full-time students for a Bachelor’s degree) at Brooklyn College and those who wish to complete the Certificate only.

Requirements/Application
Applicants will need to have a high school diploma and to apply to Brooklyn College as matriculated students for a certificate program. The application form will be submitted directly to Brooklyn College directly, rather than going through the CUNY central application process.

All students applying to Brooklyn College must take the Skills Assessment Tests, to determine whether they will require any remedial support.

Tuition will be based on the College’s rate for part-time students, which is $250 per credit. Most courses are three credits each. The NPHD hopes to be able to offer some scholarships for this program in the future.

The Certificate Program also provides a route to a four-year college degree. Students who have completed the Certificate Program have enough credits to be able to apply for full matriculation status as transfer students. This eliminates the requirements for SAT testing and puts the emphasis on college performance rather than high school grades. For more information on the program, please call the NPHD at 718-449-5000, ext. 2267.
