Successful completion of this sequence results in the award of a Brooklyn College Fundraising Management Certificate. *

Sequence Location: Brooklyn College Student Center and the Foundation Center, 79 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan

All courses start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.

The courses in each sequence build upon each other, with earlier courses providing helpful background for the material covered in later courses. However, it is not essential to take all the courses in a sequence, particularly if you have some experience in the areas covered in the earlier courses.

 

Course OF1: Introduction to Fundraising for Nonprofits | January 21, 2010

Intended for: admin, fundraising, development staff

Learning effective avenues of fundraising as well as tried and proven fundraising techniques enhances a fundraiser’s natural abilities, has a measurable positive effect on the bottom line and increases the effectiveness and long-term viability of your organization. To achieve these goals, this course will cover:

  1. Overview of fundraising – identifying effective channels for raising funds for your organization
  2. Producing effective and targeted vision and mission statements
  3. Self- Assessment – how do we currently measure up?

Course OF2: How Much We Need – and How We’re Going to Get It | January 28, 2010

Intended for: admin, fundraising, development staff

Knowing how much money you need is critical to developing a plan for going about getting it. To effectively raise funds you have to specify the programs you will develop and operate and quantify the costs of those programs. Then you can provide potential funders with the detail they will require to evaluate your funding application. The quantification and the plan are the subjects of this course.

Course OF3: Resources for Fundraisers: The Foundation Center (a Paradigm) | February 25, 2010

Intended for: admin, fundraising, development staff

We all know our grass roots supporters and should cultivate them carefully. But, especially in today’s economic climate, identifying more universal sources of funding is critical. In this course we utilize The Foundation Center as a paradigm of a centralized resource that provides nonprofits with information on a wider array of funding sources.

  1. Using the resources of the Foundation Center: how to use this sort of resource
  2. Identifying potential foundation funders: How to drill down to funders who will be receptive
  3. Proposal writing: How to best make your case

Course OF4: It’s All About Relationships | February 17, 2010

Intended for: admin, fundraising, development staff

Individuals, foundations and corporate entities all respond more favorably to organizations with whom they are familiar. Once you’ve “captured” a donor they can be a perpetual funding source for your organization if you assure that they feel appreciated. In this course we discuss ways to cultivate and preserve donor relationships.

  1. Special events – social get-togethers, facility tours, formal dinners
  2. Relationship building – keeping donors up-to-date with email, mail and phone calling
  3. Donor cultivation – meetings, referral requests

Course OF5: Putting It All Together | March 4, 2010

Intended for: admin, fundraising, development  staff

Fundraising takes place in the context of a nonprofit with numerous dimensions, all of which need to interact harmoniously in order for fundraising to be most effective. In this course we discuss bringing the service delivery and management dimensions of your organization into the fundraising loop. We also discuss how to use technology and Web 2.0 capabilities to add to your fundraising leverage.

  1. Working with staff and volunteers – making everyone conscious of the fundraising implications of service delivery activities
  2. Marketing and technology
  3. Using social networking
  4. Fundraising on the web

Course OF6: Putting It To Use | April 8, 2010

Intended for: admin, fundraising, development staff
Our last session will focus on a topic that’s foremost on every fundraiser’s mind these days – how to respond to the challenges of the current economic climate. We’ll then give course participants time to share situations and questions with other members of the group, and offer all participants the opportunity for one-on-one consultations with the fundraising experts who developed and delivered this course sequence.

  1. Fundraising in the current economic climate
  2. Open forum for questions
  3. Individual consultations
