Successful completion of this sequence results in the award of an overall Brooklyn College Financial Tracking Certificate. *

Sequence Location: DYCD Office: 156 William Street, Manhattan, 3rd Floor Computer Training Room
All courses start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.

The courses in each sequence build upon each other, with earlier courses providing helpful background for the material covered in later courses. However, it is not essential to take all the courses in a sequence, particularly if you have some experience in the areas covered in the earlier courses.

 

Course FM1: Basic Bookkeeping | March 5, 2010

Intended for: finance staff

Learn the basics of bookkeeping with special application to non-profit organizations. Topics covered include:

  1. Accounting principles; debits and credits
  2. Journals and ledgers
  3. Trial balance and balance sheet
  4. Annual statements; P&L statements
  5. Bank reconciliations
  6. Payroll , tax and reporting issues

Course FM2: Advanced Bookkeeping | March 8, 2010

Intended for: senior finance staff

Build on your bookkeeping knowledge by adding additional skills and capabilities. This course will teach:

  1. Managing accounts payable and receivables
  2. Advanced general ledger techniques
  3. Purchasing, assets and depreciation
  4. Using audit trails
  5. Loans and loan depreciation
  6. Consolidated financial statements

Course FM3: Basic Accounting Information Systems | March 22, 2010

Intended for: finance and IT staff

Learn the basics of how to effectively use accounting software to streamline your non-profit bookkeeping tasks and increase your on-the-job capabilities. This course will cover:

  1. Evaluation of the AIS software landscape; selecting the right software for your organization
  2. Setting your organization up for your accounting software – information gathering and chart of accounts
  3. Transferring data to your new accounting software
  4. Managing revenue and expenses
  5. Managing bank accounts and cash
  6. Budgets and projections

QuickBooks is used to illustrate principles taught in this course.

  6. Advanced non-profit accounting issues

Course FM5: Special Nonprofit Bookkeeping Issues | April 12, 2010

Intended for: finance staff

Learn what you wish they would have taught you in school about the unique issues that face bookkeepers in a nonprofit setting! This course covers the accepted practices for handling issues that do not arise in a commercial bookkeeping setting. You will learn about:

  1. Tracking income from various nonprofit-oriented sources
  2. Handling cash receipts in a nonprofit setting
  3. Nonprofit payroll and expense reimbursement issues
  4. End of month and year closing issues
  5. Nonprofit budgeting strategies
  6. Cash flow reporting, forecasting and management

Course FM6: Fiscal Management: Recap and Group Discussion | April 19, 2010

Intended for: finance staff

During this session the instructor will recap the course material to assure that participants retain an overview of what they’ve learned, and provide a context for detailed individual review. In a group context, participants will describe what they’ve gained from the sequence and share how they intend to apply the new knowledge to their daily work lives.
