“It was very easy to understand the training. The manual your consultant put together was circulated to my board and we trust her understanding of internal controls.”

Set-Up And Internal Controls

General Setup and Internal Controls

Ongoing Financial Management

Board Accountability

Setting up well-structured systems is the best way to prevent financial problems from occurring. NPHD can help you set up your organization’s bookkeeping and control functions to conform to standards and keep you on top of your financial situation at all times. We can also assist you with difficulties in specific problem areas. We offer:

General bookkeeping set-up:  We help your organization put in place a bookkeeping system that meets fundamental accounting requirements. This system will also support the basic reporting capabilities needed to comply with grantor requirements, including PERS and other grantor voucher systems. We can assist in selecting a payroll service if that is appropriate.

Financial services information technology: For organizations that are large or complex, or which would benefit for other reasons, NPHD can help you put a computerized bookkeeping and financial management system in place. We work with you to identify your organization’s specific needs and determine whether QuickBooks, Peachtree or Fund-EZ is best suited for your organization. Then we support you in implementing the selected system.

Design and implementation of internal controls: Every organization needs policies and procedures to protect assets and assure accurate reporting. The lack of such internal controls can lead to negative findings by auditors, which in turn can interfere with fundraising and even ongoing funding. The possibility of legislating specific internal control requirements for nonprofits is also under discussion.

We review the policies and procedures now in place, and make specific recommendations for strengthening them if needed. If appropriate we can both draft revised procedure documents and train staff on their implementation.
